LG says no to OLED, hints at iPad 3 Retina Display.

The iPhone 4's super-crisp Retina Display will not remain an Apple exclusive, according to LG Display chief executive Kwon Young-soo.
Speaking to reporters in Korea, Young-soo said that Samsung "is misleading the market" when it comes to mobile displays, "because OLED displays are not suitable in terms of picture quality, response time, energy consumption and contrast ratios for smartphones and tablets."

Sour grapes or not, instead of going after the OLED technology that's doing so well for the Samsung Galaxy S2, Young-soo said that LG Display - the branch of LG which manufactures the Retina Display for Apple - will instead start sharing out the LG technology to other smartphone producers. And just to give the iPad 3 rumour pot a bit of a stir, he also mentioned that LG Display were in talks with Apple over incoporating the Retina Display technology into the next iteration of the iPad.

However, this doesn't mean LG is done with OLED technology altogether: "LG Display may release a 55-inch OLED TV set sometime in the latter half of next year", he added. Now that we'd like to see.
